In Orthodox tradition, Jesus Christ is called Pantocrator, meaning “Almighty” or “All-powerful”. The creator of the universe who oversees his creations with love.
The central tholos (dome) of all Byzantine churches is painted with the image of the Almighty Jesus. In the churches that lack a dome, in the style of the Basilica, the icon is painted in the center of the ceiling of the church.
In the orthodox Christian Iconography, the Almighty Jesus (Pantocrator) is depicted stern but full of love with his right hand blessing and his left hand carrying the gospel. A special golden halo surrounds His head, usually with the letters A – Ω.
